Graphic design, to me, moves beyond simply transferring information, and becomes a practice and discipline which inspires behavioural change. Design maintains society by presenting and maintaining shared beliefs through the representation of abstract concepts, which ultimately facilitate social and cultural inquiry. As a result, it is integral that designers understand their role in the impact and implications of their design within the greater contexts of society, culture, politics and the environment.
Graphic Design has the potential to be a sustainable medium which advocates sustainable consumer messages, affecting positive environmental, social and cultural change. However, this potential relies on the responsibility of the graphic designer to take action and promote these important messages.
